GET INTO THE LATEST HAIR COLOR CRAZE!

Hair chalking is an easy, quick and inexpensive way to add temporary color to your hair. You can do it yourself without making a big commitment.

David John, master stylist and colorist at the Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon in Los Angeles, offers these hair chalking tips.

Step 1: Buy your chalk
John says that you can buy pastels online or spend $60+ in a retail store if you really want to splurge. All you need other than the chalk is a water bottle, protective gloves, towels and a flat iron.

Step 2: Prep your hair
Make sure to wet the hair first so the color will attach to it. However if you’re blonde, do not wet the hair before chalking unless you want the color to stay in longer.

Step 3: Add the color
Apply to the chalk to the strand of hair in a downward motion, twist the hair as you chalk. You can try for a fun ombre look, or just do a couple strands.

Step 4: Let it dry
While John says that you can blowdry your hair, others recommend air drying so that you don't blow off the chalk.

Step 5: Set the color
Seal the color in with a flat iron or a curling iron to add waves. Apply hair spray as a final step.

Step 6: Wash it out
when you are ready
The color generally will only last one shampoo; however, if the hair is more porous, such as color-treated blonde hair, it can last a couple shampoos. You can use a clarifying shampoo or dish soap to remove the color more quickly -- both have more detergent. Don’t use dish soap on your whole head, just on the strands that have been colored.

TIP
If you want something brighter, you can apply white chalk first and then go over it with the color you want to make it pop.
Hair chalking don'ts
John also offers these cautions when hair chalking.

Don’t apply the chalk with any wax or product in your hair.
Don’t use water on blonde hair if you don’t want the color to last.
Wear protective clothing when applying and sleep on an old pillow case as the color will transfer.
Don’t try this near the water/beach or on a rainy day.
Hair chalking tips for your hair color

Blonde -- Blondes shouldn't wet their hair unless they want REALLY bright, long lasting results.

Brown -- Brunettes can use any color hair chalk. With lighter brown hair, the color will be more intense.

Red -- Redheads can chalk their hair, too. They just need to pick the right colors of chalk.

Black -- Those women with black hair need to pick bright, vibrant shades of chalk.

Hair Chalking Tips By Hair Color

Read An Exciting Post From A Hair Chalk Fan Blogger!

Last week, we were shooting Lauren’s collection for Kohl’s and at the end of the day, we got our hands on some colorful soft chalks. How can a girl resist when there are pinks + purples involved??

Lauren’s pink cotton candy bun was pretty cute! As you may know, hair chalking has been around for a little while now and it’s a great way to temporarily add color to your locks. Above you see that chalk can create a very similar look to dye without commitment. But… with every action comes a reaction. There are several things you need to know about chalking your hair.

Below are some tips + tricks along with some very important advice for before and after…

Twist the hair as you chalk. The texture from twisting makes the chalk release more pigment.

Always brush the excess powder out after chalking each piece.
If you’re blonde or you have blonde tips, DO NOT wet your hair before chalking. It will stain if you do because adding water to pure pigment creates a real dye. If you’re okay with the staining for several washes then go for it! If you’re looking to do color for the day, do not add water at any time.

If your hair color is anything darker than blonde and you don’t have blonde tips, you’ll NEED the water. Doubling the pigment is what will help the colors to show up on darker hair. Mist a little water on the strand with a spray bottle, then chalk it up!

Hair Chalk Do's & Don'ts Written By TheBeautyDepartment.com
Red heads– try it without water and if it’s just not showing up, add a little water. It just depends on how light or dark your red is.

Use only “professional hair chalk” - not street chalk. THESE are our all time faves… and we’ve tried a lot. They may seem a little expensive, but so is hair color– and hair color removal. Regular chalk just doesn’t work the same. It’s harder to transfer and getting it to stick to your hair can be virtually impossible.

Be careful not to use OIL pastels!  Removing oil pastels would be a nightmare, not to mention, they’d feel very sticky.  Try doing 2 colors on one strand! Really fun and looks tie-dyed!

Always wear a robe or cape and lay something down on the floor to catch the chalk dust that falls off. It may get on your clothes during the day, so try and wear something close to the color you’re sporting.

Before you shower, brush with a soft, natural hair brush get out as much pigment as you possibly can! It should come off almost all the way with brushing.

Don’t chalk your hair too often. At the end of the day, you’re using powder pigment on the ends of your hair and that can suck up a lot of natural moisture that you need in the ends of your hair.

Shampoo your hair with a clarifying shampoo after chalking. Soft chalk pastels use “gum arabic” as a binder. It’s a very very small amount and totally natural, but it’s made from a tree sap so it’s really important to get it all out.

Conditioning treatment is a MUST after you wash out your chalk. Replenish the moisture that may get sucked out with chalking.

5 Reasons Your Kids & Teens Need Hair Chalk - A gift buying guide
Kids and teens love to experiment with art, and themselves!  Who remembers finger painting?  Who remembers finger painting on the wall?  (Sorry Mom!)  Here's how you know if your child would enjoy hair chalk.  Let's go down the list of things YOU did to be "creative" when you were a kid.  Here are a few things everyone does to change their look that are safe (usually) and fun!

- Ever Marker Your Hair?  (You know you did!)  - Cut Holes In Your Jeans?  -  Paint Your Nails?  -  Dye Your Hair?   -  Borrow Your Moms Makeup?  - Go All Out For Halloween?  - Try Colored Contact Lenses?  -  Get Anything Pierced?  -  Draw On Yourself?

The point is, it's human nature to explore art and creative expression with our clothes, skin and our hair!  Instead of taking our kinds to a tattoo parlor -  let them try something like Hair Chalk!  It is a very mild, easy, fun and SAFE way to allow your kids and teens to experiment without eternal repercussions!

We asked our own customers why they bought Hair Chalk, and here are the top 5 most common answers we heard!

Not Permanent!   Kids & parents felt hugely relieved to be able to let their kids play and experiment with something as safe and as mild as Hair Chalk.  Because it washes out after a few days, there is NO permanent damage.

No Maintenance!   Kids and teens can have all the fun they want without any fuss!  Putting on Hair Chalk is a fun event they can do with family or friends, and can even become an overnight party theme, with each girl returning home with new hair!  Taking hair chalk out is as simple as a few washes or a few days going by, no fuss, no muss!  Want more color?  Just add more!

Worry Free!   Because this product is so safe, the worry disappears when using it!  Unlike hair dye, there are no unpredictable results (and ooooo, we've heard some horror stories!)  Regular hair dye can stain clothes, carpets, and skin - while hair chalk is light and powdery but easily controlled with a water bottle or damp hair.

So Much Fun!    Hair chalk is so much fun to use!  What could be easier than literally coloring your own hair, just like a coloring book, with actual chalk?  It can be a group activity or a solo adventure to change your look, boost your confidence, and turn heads all with one sweep of the hand!

Endless Options!   The 5th most common reason our customers turned to hair chalk is the endless options they had!  Using real hair dye to color your hair too often can cause permanent damage or hair loss (yikes!) but the worst thing that can happen with "too much" hair chalking (which you would have to do a lot of) is an easy fix with a leave in moisturizer.  With so many colors and so many hairstyles available, your kids can go from Princess to Diva to Goth to Superstar to Halloween to Prom in mere minutes!   With no permanent damage!  No arguing!  Just let them have fun, and wash out when done!

FOX NEWS MAGAZINE TRIES HAIR CHALK!  (and writes an editorial, see below!)

Want to brighten up your look this spring?

Hair chalk is a fun and easy way to add temporary flair to your natural hair.

With just a shampoo wash to return it to its normal color, we figured it was worth a try.   Nineteen dollars later, we were armed with Hair Chalk Talk's 24 Set and two blank canvases — one blonde and one brunette.

After 30 minutes of chalking, our locks were multi-hued, we had made a complete mess, and were certain we'd try it again.

Here’s why:

You Feel Bold:
In just minutes, we had shed our drab nine-to-five image. Whether it's a subtle pink stripe, bright orange tips or the colors of the rainbow splattered across your strands, this funky touch makes you feel bold, unique and fresh.

It's Temporary: Okay, so we've all had a horrific dye job or horrendous hair day, but with hair chalk, any mess-ups are easily fixed. If you don't like the color, it washes right out.

Freedom of Expression: Feeling blue? Wear it! Want to match your green eyes to your hair? You can! We chose the most vibrant colors in the pack. Pink, orange, purple and green.

It's Fun: Above all, this was a blast!
