Hair Chalk Talk
Here are some great tips for chalking, & some awesome helpful hints about getting the most out of your chalking!
1. Can I use sidewalk chalk or oil pastel to chalk my hair?
No, Don't use those. Sidewalk chalk is too hard for hair! It will dry and potentially damage your hair. Using hair specific chalk is important for quality & results! Oil pastels can stain your hair and WILL stain your clothes!
2. How Long will the color stay in hair?
Based on most users' experiences, color can stay from 1-3 days, then it will fade. But until you wash it out, you can still enjoy color in hair!
4. After I chalk it can I like curl it or straighten it?
YES! The heat actually sets it in so it lasts longer! Wait for your hair to dry completely before using heat tools for best results!
5. My hair is black, what chalk colors will be good for me?
Red, Blue, Pink, and Purple are the favorites for black or brown hair - but don't be afraid to try more subtle options! It helps to dampen the hair before chalking for maximum brightness!
7. Will the chalk get on your clothes when you are walking?
No, but it's a good idea to lightly brush your hair a bit to make sure any potential residue falls off first. Some users throw on an old tee when chalking, then brush, then change clothes!
8. How many times can one Chalk be used?
It depends on how much you want to chalk your hair. If you like, one chalk can be enough for you to chalk all your hair! But you can certainly use it over & over again if you just do a few strands at a time!
First! Get your hands on some great soft hair chalks. How can a girl resist when there are pinks + purples involved??
Helpful Hint: Twist the hair as you chalk. The texture from twisting makes the chalk release more pigment.
Always brush the excess powder out after chalking each piece.
BLONDES: If you’re blonde or you have blonde tips, don't wet your hair before chalking unless you want it to last longer than a few days. If you’re okay with that then go for it!
DARK HAIR: If your hair color is anything darker than blonde, dampen your hair with water. This will help the colors to show up on darker hair. Mist a little water on a strand with a spray bottle, then chalk it up! It won’t stain darker hair the same way it will on lighter hair. :)
RED HEADS: Try it without water & if it’s just not showing up, add a little water. It depends on how light or dark your red is.
Hair color, at the salon or even the grocery store, can be expensive! Remember you get what you pay for, so don't skimp & try regular chalks to use on your hair. Otherwise you may be visiting a salon anyway to repair the damage!
GET CRAZY: Try doing 2 colors on one strand! Really fun and looks tie-dyed! Do specific strands for up dos & more!
STAY CLEAN: Throw a towel down on the floor to catch the chalk dust that falls off while you chalk it up!
Before you shower, brush with a soft, natural hair brush get out as any loose pigment.
WASHING OUT: Hair chalk pastels use “gum arabic” as a binder. It’s a very very small amount and totally natural, but it’s important to get it all out when you want to. A helpful hint it so use a Clarifying Shampoo & Conditioning treatment after you wash out your chalk. Replenish the moisture that may get sucked out with chalking.
